5 Steps to Correct Your Limiting Beliefs
In most cases, our biggest obstacles are not far away from us. They are not the people around us or the situation we find ourselves in, neither are they what we lack or have. They are what we think we are, what we think we are not. They are what we believe, and they are limiting.
Limiting beliefs are strong opinions and convictions we have
and believe to be true that negatively affect us. These limiting beliefs are
beliefs we hold strongly that limit us in some way.
Limiting beliefs cause a lot of limits in our life and
correcting them is not a lot of work, but it requires a lot of time and
conscious effort. I have a 5-step recipe to correct your limiting beliefs and
you’re about to get a taste of it. Grab a book and pen, let’s get in.
1. Think about
your limiting beliefs.
This heading should be, “write down your limiting
beliefs”. I childishly wanted all the headings to start with a T. It is
more effective to think of your limiting beliefs and write them down. This way,
you can work towards correcting it and always come back to it if you think your
limiting beliefs are limiting you again, or if you remember new ones. You might
also want to use a bigger sheet of paper for the next steps.
2. Think
of what made you develop those beliefs.
These limiting beliefs of ours are always developed without
us realizing it, so you need to take your time for this step. This step is
important because if you can remember how the belief started, you can easily correct
it.
Here’s a tip: Beliefs are formed
when they are taught to us as children, through life experiences, social media,
and peers.
3. Think of other beliefs to counter your limiting beliefs.
Now that you have written down your negative beliefs, come
up with other beliefs to counter them. If one of your limiting beliefs is that
you are not good enough (like me), you can counter it by saying I am enough.
These are almost like positive affirmations, if they are not. The point is,
develop beliefs that counter your limiting beliefs.
4. Test
it.
You don’t want to be too positive and become unrealistic or
too realistic to be positive. Look for people who have the same beliefs as those
you are about to develop and see how well it has been for them. You can also do
this by trying to remember those few times when you experience situations that
counter your limiting beliefs. This is most effective as it concerns your
experiences and is not based on others.
5. Try it
out.
Now that you have been able to prove and test your new unlimiting
beliefs, try it out. Do the things you were scared of, go to places you
wouldn’t dare, and explore. This is where you see that you were wrong all this
while and that you were holding on to your limits.
Limiting beliefs are limiting, but we’re meant to be
limitless. No one is completely free of these beliefs; thus, it is advisable to
try these steps. Whether you use a book or screen, these steps are effective.
“If you accept a limiting belief, then it will become a
truth for you.” – Louise Hay
